Abstract

PERICARDITIS in chronic uraemia gains its importance ordinarily trom its ominous prognostic significance^{1 2} The latter has changed in centres equipped with facilities for successful regular intermittent hae-modialysis and renal homotransplantation³. Unfortunately facilities for such advanced treatment is not available in most of the hospitals of our country. Uraemic pericarditis is usually of the dry fibrinous type but there may be associated effusion and recently it has been reported to progress even to the stage of constriction^{4 6}. It is usually a painless condition diagnosed on listening pericardial rub; but may be occasionally associated with severe chest pain². These varied clinical pictures and changing patterns have prompted us to analyse here 22 cases of uraemic pericarditis to re-evaluate its clinical features.

Abstract

Malaria is now being reported with unusual manifestations because of increasing resistance, indiscriminate use of antimalarial drugs and development of immunity. Chorea is one of the rare complication of falciparum malaria. In this case, a 28 year old male presented with fever, splenomegaly and with choreiform movement. Peripheral smear was positive for vivax malaria.

Abstract

Cysticercosis is a common tropical disease. One of the uncommon manifestations of cysticercosis and a rare complication is its disseminated form. We report an immunocompetent patient with disseminated cysticercosis who had involvement of the brain, subcutaneous tissues, eyes and skeletal muscles and presented with seizures. He was otherwise asymptomatic in spite of the extensive involvement of multiple organs. A planned approach to therapy is necessary to prevent complications.

Abstract

Hypoparathyroidism is far less common than hyperparathyroidism. Although as many as one-half of patients in an ICU setting are reported to have hypocalcemia (<8.5mg/dl), most do not have a reduction in ionized calcium. Since adequate treatment of hypoparathyroidism may lead to marked clinical improvement, serum concentration of calcium, phosphorus, and parathyroid hormone (PTH) is suggested to be determined in all individuals with calcification of the basal ganglia to rule out hypoparathyroidism.
